Dip powder vs. gel: an honest comparison

This question comes up at the front desk several times a day, and the answer people usually get — "dip lasts longer" — is true but not useful. Longer is only better if the trade-offs suit you. Here is the full comparison.

How each one is actually applied

Gel is a polish-like product painted on in coats and cured hard under a lamp between each one. Dip powder is a bonding liquid brushed onto the nail, then a fine coloured powder applied in layers and sealed with an activator. No lamp is involved at any stage.

Wear time

Gel typically gives two to three weeks. Dip typically gives three to four. But note what ends both: regrowth at the cuticle, not the color failing. If you dislike the look of a gap at the base, the extra week of dip may not buy you anything, because you will want it redone at the same point regardless.

Thickness and feel

This is where people genuinely differ. Gel is thin and close to the feel of natural polish. Dip builds in layers and has noticeably more body — still far lighter than acrylic, but you will feel it for the first day.

If you want it thinner, say so before the second layer goes on. Adjusting the build is easy; filing a finished set down is not.

Strength — and who actually needs it

Dip acts like a splint across the whole nail plate. For nails that split or peel into layers at the free edge, that is genuinely transformative — it holds the layers together while the nail grows out.

If your nails are already strong, that reinforcement buys you nothing and costs you the thinner, more natural look of gel. This is the real deciding factor, and it has nothing to do with which product is newer.

Removal

Gel soaks off in roughly fifteen minutes. Dip is denser and takes around twenty. Neither should ever be filed off aggressively or pried — that is what thins the natural nail, and it is the source of nearly every "gel ruined my nails" story.

UV exposure

Gel requires curing under a lamp; dip does not. The exposure from a gel lamp is brief and small, but if you would rather avoid it entirely, dip is the straightforward answer.

• You change color often → gel, because removal is quicker
